Shopping in Cayman

A holiday in the Cayman Islands would be incomplete without taking home a souvenir.

Shop for Souvenirs

A holiday in the Cayman Islands would be incomplete without taking home a souvenir.

Look out for orignal paintings by local artists, CDs by the islands’ talented musicians and handcrafted jewelry made from Caymanite - a colorful gemstone found only in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.

Cayman has a burgeoning cottage industry producing natural soaps, scents, candles, jams and jellies, jewelry, artwork and crafts, involving small-time artisans who have a passion for their products.

On the other end of the souvenir spectrum, there are dazzling stores selling world-class, brand-name goods at attractive prices.

The stunning array of luxury items on offer includes diamonds and pearls and nearly every other gemstone you can think of.

And while you probably want to take your watch off to relax on the beach and forget about the cares of the world, think about buying a new timepiece to take home.

Both Kirk Freeport and Island Companies stores stock an array of duty-free, top-end watches to adorn your wrist.

The best thing to do is head to George Town harbor and wander around at your leisure, perusing the many stores, or check out the malls around the island.

You are sure to find something irresistible to buy, whether a gift for friends, family or a treat for yourself.

Tip: shopping in George Town on days there are no cruise ship in port makes it a more enjoyable experience without the crowds.

The malls are mostly small and easy to navigate, with plenty of parking, and restaurants and coffee shops for refreshments when you get tired (see the mall guide on opposite page).

Camana Bay is also a delightful destination with shops which open late, a number of elegant eateries, a cinema, play areas for children, and plenty of shady outdoor spaces to sit awhile and enjoy life in the sun.

Shop and Save

You can expect to save between 10 and 40 percent on retail prices for luxury goods in Cayman compared to the U.S. and U.K.

If purchasing U.S. manufactured goods abroad, there is no duty to pay when taking these goods back into the U.S.

There are no restrictions on the amount of fragrance that E.U. citizens may take home.

There is no sales tax in the Cayman Islands.

Cigars are duty free if purchased at the airport.

U.S. citizens returning home from overseas may take $800 worth of goods into the U.S. free of duty. There is three percent duty on the first $1,000 worth of goods more than this amount.
