The Cayman Islands have a wealth of
sporting interests and sports events. The following are some of the biggest on
the yearly calendar.
In the swimming world, the premier
event is the Flowers Sea Swim. Held every June (9th June 2012), the annual
one mile open water race is overseen by founder Frankie Flowers and his family
and is a sanctioned Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association meet. Known for
drawing international competitors and former Olympians, the action takes place
on the iconic Seven Mile Beach.
Over 700 competitors have come out
in recent years and swimmers have ranged in age from eight to 80-years-old. It
is the world’s richest open water swim with over $100,000 in cash and random
prizes.
The North American, Central
American and Caribbean volleyball federation has a steady presence in Cayman.
The international body has staged a beach volleyball circuit tournament the
last three years.
In 2011 one version was held in
March with the other taking place December. The latter serves as the
Continental Cup Olympic Qualifier. Among the countries expected to field teams
are Canada, the US, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Put on by the Cayman Islands
Volleyball Federation, the tournament offers free general admission and a
chance to see some of the best players in the region compete on beautiful Seven
Mile Beach.
Jet Around Cayman is the biggest
personal watercraft race in the Cayman Islands.
A staple of Cayman summers, the
June meet has been ongoing at Seven Mile Beach for over a decade. International
riders are a big part of the action, which features racers running their jet
skis around Grand Cayman.
Outside of the race, the event has
stretched to incorporate various activities on land such as a pre-race concert,
a volleyball tournament and local dance and musical performances. A kids’ zone,
watersports activities and sponsor giveaways are also fixtures for Jet Around.
The Cedrus Investments Cayman Islands
Squash Open is another heavy hitter for local sports.
Taking place every April, the
tournament features a collection of top players such as world number one Nicol
David and Ramy Ashour. Cayman’s top local players also take part, such as
Cameron Stafford and Marlene West.
A big part of the competition is
the setting. Camana Bay constructs an all glass outdoor court to stage the
action on The Crescent, which is by the water. Local government is a big
supporter of the event and even two politicians get in on the act with the
annual ministers challenge.
