Caymanite, the islands' hidden treasure
If you are looking for jewellery with a connection to the Cayman Islands, consider a piece that includes the semi-precious stone Caymanite, which is found only in the Cayman Islands. Geologists believe Caymanite was formed 16 to 18 million years ago, possibly as a result of volcanic activity.

Because of the scarcity of Caymanite, limited supplies are available. Caymanite features coloured layers created by the metallic contents of the strata, which include iron, nickel, titanium and copper.  Caymanite craftsmen cut and polish the stone into a marble-like finished product, which is generally used in jewellery, sculptures and other decorative pieces.

Kirk Freeport, a locally-owned duty-free company operating in the Cayman Islands since 1973, carries a large selection of Caymanite jewellery.  After collecting raw Caymanite from Grand Cayman’s East End or from Cayman Brac, Kirk Freeport works with world-renowned jewellery designers, such as David Yurman, to cut and polish the stones into wearable pieces.  David Yurman’s jewellery makers then place these polished stones into their jewellery, resulting in a custom-made piece exclusive to the Cayman Islands. Caymanite was first introduced to the David Yurman collection in 2010, inset in David Yurman dog tags, cufflinks, and crosses.

Kabana, an inlay jewellery company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was one of the first major jewellery designers to custom create Caymanite jewellery for Kirk Freeport. Kirk Freeport carries dozens of Caymanite pieces in each of their jewellery stores with necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings.  Kabana sets Caymanite in 14-carat gold and silver in a wide range of prices. David Yurman and Kabana are available exclusively at Kirk Freeport.
