Culture after dark
Words by Joanna Lewis

There is plenty of fun to be had in Cayman after the sun goes down. Visitors will find activities to suit everyone, from culture vultures to those looking for a little adventure.

The National Gallery has a number of evening activities, available to non-members for a modest fee.

Foreign films buffs can check out the gallery's fortnightly CineClub. Held every second Monday, for just $5 movie fans can enjoy a range of art-house films.

Art Flix, on every third Wednesday of the month, features art films and documentaries from 5.30pm till 7pm. Visitors are welcome to discuss the film they've just viewed and complimentary wine is available.

The gallery also runs a once monthly Curator's lecture, at 7.30pm, usually in conversation with the exhibiting artist.

For those looking for mainstream films, head either to the Marquee Cinema or the new six-screen Hollywood Theatre cinema, in the Camana Bay development.

Away from the silver screen, there is still plenty of drama to be found. The Cayman Drama Society put on regular productions. Staged at the society's re-furbished Prospect Playhouse, in Red Bay, it's a fun way to get a good dose of culture in the evenings. Visit their website at www.caymandramasociety.org.

The Cayman National Cultural Foundation also stage shows at the re-furbished Harquail Theatre, from comedies to week-long festivals. Visit their website at www.artscayman.org.

For those interested in learning about Cayman's nocturnal wildlife, the National Trust for the Cayman Islands runs some evening activities including occasional guided bat watching tours at sunset.

For those seeking adrenaline-filled adventure, you'll find ample to keep you amused.

Cayman Kayaks offers a series of night time tours, from full moon excursions through the Mangrove Wetlands, to exploring bio-bay. Not only do visitors enjoy a fun-filled night-time activity, it's also the perfect opportunity to learn about Cayman's mangroves and delicate eco-system. Just ask the tour guides.

Other night-time water activities include the sunset catamaran tour, operated by Red Sail Sports.

A more 'traditional' adventure can be found on the Jolly Roger, a replica pirate boat, which runs regular sunset cruises. Cruisers pay up-front for an open bar. They even fire the cannon for a truly authentic feel.

For keen fisherman, there are ample operators offering night-time fishing excursions. Expect to catch grouper, grunts, red snapper and yellow tail.

Those who wish to explore under the sea, many dive companies offer night dive excursions for the truly adventurous. Get a first-hand view of how colourful the reef can be at night and marvel at how lively the sea can be after dark.

For those who would rather stay dry, but still want to explore beneath the waves, Atlantis offers the perfect solution - a night time submarine trip in the comfort of one of the most technologically advanced passenger submarines in the world.

With all these activities, and more, there's no excuse not to get out and explore Cayman at night.
