Sunset cruises
Words by Joanna Lewis

What could be a more relaxing away to round off a busy day of sightseeing than to let someone else take the helm on a sunset cruise?

Getting out on the water is a must in Cayman and doing so at sunset offers an entirely different experience.

Red Sail Sports offers a variety of sunset cruises six times a week catering to everyone's needs, aboard a spacious 65-feet catamaran.

Choose between a two hour sunset cruise with drinks and appetizers or a full dinner cruise. Cruises depart from the Seven Mile Beach area, with pick ups from either the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa or the Grand Cayman Beach Suites.

The two-hour sunset cruise - which can accommodate up to 70 guests - sets off just before the sun sets, for a leisurely sail around Cayman's pristine waters.

Once everyone is safely on board, the catamaran motors out to a safe distance from shore, where the motors are cut and the crew get to work hauling up the sails.

As the sails catch the tropical breeze, the catamaran sails off serenely into the open waters, the Caribbean Sea gently lapping at the catamaran's hull.

Travelling up to 10 knots, depending on wind speed, the catamaran sails up and down the coast of Cayman, up to a mile off shore. The trip offers a wonderful evening out on the water in the company of friends and family or that special someone.

There are plenty of seats at the rear of the boat to sit back and relax in. The more adventurous can make their way to the front of the boat and chill out on the trampolines, which stretch between the hulls.

Look down and gaze at the water rushing past, or lie down and take in the Caribbean sky.

As you enjoy the setting sun casting an ethereal glow across the sea, enjoy a complimentary thirst-quenching rum punch, or a drink from the well-stocked cash bar. There is even a selection of tasty complimentary hors d'oeuvres.

As the sun sets - a dazzling array of reds, yellows, oranges and pinks dance across the horizon - the stars begin to twinkle above. Away from light pollution, it's the ideal time for some star gazing.

If you'd rather up the experience, join the Red Sail crew for the sunset dinner sail.

Operating three evenings a week, the three hour cruise follows the same format as the sunset cruise, with the added bonus of a sumptuous three course meal.

Served banquet style and deftly prepared by the chefs at the Westin Casuraina Resort and Spa, guests enjoy a soup, choice of entrees and a divine dessert.

What could be more romantic than enjoying a meal for two abroad your very own floating restaurant, as you sail serenely along the Seven Mile Beach coast line?

The menu changes regularly, but popular choices include a soup or green salad, fresh catch of the day with Cayman style sauce and steamed seasonal vegetables, key lime pie or Strawberry cheesecake.

After dinner, retire to the trampolines and let the stresses of the day wash away.

All too soon the catamaran has turned full stern and is heading back to shore.

But, whichever cruise you choose, rest assured you'll feel relaxed and rejuvenated. The perfect way to end the perfect day.
